At a. i-ecent- meeting of the executive council of the New Zealand Institute of .Horticulture a syllabus in horticulttu-e drawr^ up- •by the Canterbury district council of the institute for horticultural students- at the- • Christchureh Technical College, was received, and appreciation and congratulations were ordered to be conveyed'to" the district council; '.■ The Minister of Lands acknowledged a remif from-the institute's recent conference regarding the necessity for the preservation, of. native bush'on hill country, particularly, on .-watersheds, with a view to maintenance, .of .regularity of stream-flow and prevention...of. soil-erosion,- scenery preservation, and conservation of hydroelectric supplies, and of food ,; for birds The Minister stated that the position was fully recognised; and concrete instances of such reservations were given. • _The.hon.. secretary of the Great South jßoad.Beautifying..CouncU. of Auckland (Inc.) forwarded particulars of the activities of that body, and a committee was set up. .to. report, further on the general question of road, beautifieation throughout the Dominion,.. . . •
