ATHLETIC NOMINATIONS

It was announced today by Mr. L. xV. Tracy, hem. secretary of the New Zealand Aniateur Athletic Association, that the following athletes had been nominated by the association for inclusion in the New Zealand team fo compote at the British Empire Games, to be held in England in August next:— 11. K. Brainsby (Auckland), long jump and hop, step, and jump. T. G. Broadway (Canterbury), 440 yards and 880 yards. , J.. E.'Lovelock (Oxford University), one mile. ... P. J. Haekett (Auckland), the present holder of the New Zealand high jump championship title, who, competing against the Australian, J. P. Metealfe, at • Auckland on' Saturday last registered the best performance to date in this event by a New Zealandei1, namely, 6ft 11-Bin, is to undergo a further trial before-a decision is made in his case.' • •'."•■-• ".■..■■ Nominations were received by the council of the 'N.Z.A.A.A. from each of the athletic centres except the Wellington aiid West Coast -: (North Island) centres. Mr. Tracy stated that of those nominated J. W. Savidan (Auckland), S. A: Lay (West Coast, N. 1.), and I. Craig (Otago) were not available, and accordingly were not considered. He added that there was no order of preference attaching to the three nominations that were to be sent forward to thp New Zealand Olympic and British Empire Games Association. PERSON All NOTES. Since going overseas J. E. Lovelock, formerly of Otago University College, has made a great name for himself, and his performances require no recapitulation. His greatest achievement to date has been his one mile world record of 4rnin 7 3-ss.ee, established in. America on July 15 last year. T. G. Broadway has fine performances to his credit in the 440 yards, and 880 yards' events, over which; distances he is the New Zealand champion. Recently at Christehureh he broke the New Zealand record for 1000 yaids." Haekett and Brainsby have come into the limelight this season* both having shown splendid form in the past few months. Haekett won the New Zealand high, jump championship at Wellington last month with, a jump of sft lOin, but ho has since changed his style of jumping, and.on Saturday last cleared ■ the- bar at 6ft 1 1-Sin. When in Auckland, Metealfe, the Australian, jumper, expressed the opinion that Haekett would be capable of doing Oft 6in. He is 20 years of age. Brainsby, who is 23 years of age, was the best all-round, athlete at the Auckland Training College in 1931, and as an Auckland University College athlete he also had a fine .record. He won the Auckland provincial long jump and hop, step, and jump championships in 1931 and again this year, and at the New Zealand championship meeting at Wellington recently he won the hop, step and jump, establishing a New Zealand reepr.d^and. ,was (second in ithe Jong jump.- His best official performances in these two events are as follows:—Long jump, 22ft 3-Jin; hop, step and jump,, 49ft BJin.
