School For Wives
The .Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr. Gordon Lang) opened a new wing recently in a college in Hampstead, N.W., where the students have laundry sinks instead of desks, kitchens instead of classrooms; arid take degrees in: all the domestic virtues that make good wives and mothers, states the "Daily MaiL" As Dr. Lang made a tour of the new wing he encountered students boiling marmalade, glazing galantines, preparing a dinner, tossing pancakes, making drosses, and embroidering pinafores. The National Society's Training College for Domestic Subjects ' keeps its students so busy that they keep on cooking during the state visits of archbishops. . The ' college, which * was founded in 1893, in the Old; Brew House Lambeth Palace Grounds, S.E., and is now in Fortune Green Eoad, trains teachers of domestic science, matron housekeepers, and young housewives. COMPETENT HOUSEWIFE; A girl -is mads into a matron housekeeper in two years, and. a cook in one year. A competent housewife can be turned out in two terms. There are vast laundries (where every girl has her own electric iron), experimental kitchens, upholstery, housewifery, and dressmaking rooms, and a complete flat where students take it in turn to keep house on a strict budget for a' month at a time. In this flat they do all their own housework, laundering, cooking, and ordering, and are expected to provide a varied menu on 7s 6d a head •per week. - ..-.,■
