CRICKET

NO NORTH-SOUTH' MATCH

QUESTION OF TOURS

Advice has been received by the Wellington Cricket Association from the New Zealand Cricket Council to the effect that the idea of playing an inter-island match this season has been abandoned, the reason given being that players are unable to obtain leave. ' This following the cancellation of the visit of a team from Australia, leaves the remainder of the season without any attraction of note, apart from • the conclusion of the championships. A doubt that the North-South match would be staged was expressed in "The Post" on Saturday, when the point was stressed that cricket plans in the matter of special attractions should be laid well ahead. Other countries mapped out their programmes years ahead, but ;New Zealand did not even know whether there would be a special attraction next season. It has.been reported that there is the likelihood of an M.C.C. team visiting New Zealand next season., but .cricket associations in New Zealand apparently know nothing of it. The Wellington Cricket Association, according to views expressed by members on the subject of tours, is in the- dark, but it is understood that information as to prospects for the future is being. sought from the New Zealand Council.

There has been keen disappointment at the loss of a visit from Australia this season, and it was urged in ''The Post" on" Saturday that-there was still: time for an attractive three weeks' tour to be arranged, it being known that numerous well-known players in Australia were keen to come to New Zealand, eren at this stage of the season. -'■ < '
