LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

Parliament has long given official recognition to the position of Leader of the Opposition, but has failed to make adequate provision for the expense and labour involved in discharging the duties of the office. In proposing an additional grant for secretarial assistance the Government is now doing no more than all parties, whether in office pr in Opposition, have admitted is just. The late Leader of the Opposition, with his passion for work and for the cause which lie ..had at heart, never spared himself nor considered the effect of his unending labour on his own health. Possibly if he had been given more assistance he would have worked just as hard at something else. But it is not right that these conditions should be imposed, in future. In enabling the Leader of the Opposition to have more assistance Parliament permits him to give closer attention to the more important duties of his office without having to wear himself out in the process. :
