GOOD THOUGH BEATEN

KING'S KNAVE : BAMBURY

(Special from "Early Bird.") AUCKLAND, December 18. By his defeat in the Te AwamuUi Cup a I the Waipa Meeting on Saturday King's Knave did not lose any friends iv connection with his Auckland Cup engagement, for he was good even iv defeat. He lost tour or live lengths at the start and then at the end of three furlongs he had pushed up into a good position on the inside, where ho met with a good deal of bother. Mungatoou and Tvishna were sotting a fast pace out in front, but the latter stopped suddenly making the liouic turn and sent King's Knave back to second to last. Mungatoon just led at the turn from King March, Alloy, blaster Xorval (who ran very wide), fled Sun, and King's Knave. The last-named came again on the inside in the run home and was only a. neck and a head behind Mtmgutoou and- King March at the poet. King's Knave was undoubtedly the unlucky runner. His effort was impressive, and with a stone ofE his back he must take a lot of beating on- Boxing Day.

Mungatoon and King-March both went : olid races, and it looks as if the hitter, now in a new stable, is not a ho7>eless case altogether. He.is in the Auckland Cup. Mungatoon's engagement on the first day at Ellerslie is the Christmas Handicap. Master Korval -was rather disappointing and it looked as if his trainer had. been a, bit easy with him. Alloy went an honest race. Red Sun was a long way back five furlongs from home, where he commenced a solid run to get within striking distance at the home turn, only to fail to come on. However, he will be better suited by the bigger Ellerslie course and should not be disgraced in the Auckland Cup. , ■

Despite the fact that Bambury drew the outside, he was made favourite for the Flying Handicap, but with all his speed he failed to get near the front at any part,, although he was up fourth halfway through, The handicap of the draw was too much. Impasto, from the same stable, was in front soon after the dispatch and he was still there, at the home turn, where Jonathan had joined him, with Tradesman, Mareehal, Bambury, and Chief Cook following. Jonathan was going away at the finish. to score a comfortable win from Impasto, with Tradesman and L'Allegro (last at the turn) up handy. Jonathan will probably run in the Auckland Cup. Impasto is , coming back to his best, and while he should run well in. the Railway Handicap he, will be all the better for another race or two. •

Star Artist outclassed a smart field in the Hack Cup. Badly drawn, she took a couple of furlongs; to get to the front round the first bend, and wak making play with Euri and Lueidus handy at the home turn. One kick from her rider and she flew away, to be over four lengths clear at the half-distance, and she finally won by almost this margin .It was a stylish effort. This filly is in the hack seven as well as the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie, and she-will not be outclassed "in either. Of the opposition, Lueidus hung on well, and Royal Gallant (jvho was last away from the barrier), Arawa Rose, Alpinus, and . Epigram were running on at the end. Iluri and Rereatu stopped badly. ;

Tudor outclassed the opposition in the Pirongia Hurdks, for Jfe was always in a winning position. He looks -like developing into a topnotch jumper. Welcome Boy and Mia Stella went fair races, the latter having an interrupted passage. Clan Ronald waa beat of the others. The winney k not engagedl at Ellcrslic next week.

Chief Lap ought to have won the Kiliikihi Hack Handicap,' but he was ' in trouble ou the turns and was floundering badly.. Then ho ■went under by half a head only to' Tin Lap, who is in excellent form.' This ■,pair finished well clear of the others.

Queen Nona was in front early in the Waipa Plate, but was soon headed by Wait and See and Respectful. ■'The Matter was done' with at the home turn, where' Queen Nona came up again. Wait and See and Queen Nona had the finish to themselves, the former scoring by half a head. Ling Moy finished on into third place, and Record Flight was also showing up at the end. Pound Sterling was drawn off the course and then ran a good race under difficulties.

King's Archer had little difficulty 5n winning the l'atorangi Handicap from a weak field, although with better luck in the running Thespis might have headed him. The latter is in great order for his Ellerslie hurdle engagements. Knight of Australia was hardly ready but will improve.

Loombination came frcn a long way back in the Ohaupo Ht S Handicap to cut down Arch' Ruler ( ist out of the barrier) and win his fit race, while D'Artagnan, last two furloi.gs from home, was right up third. Salt Spray went a fair race, finishing sixth. in between tlie races Ammon Ra {'11.I1. Webster) was sprinted six furlongs, but was not out after time. He looks bi« and muscular and he pulled up woll. Ammon Ea will have his first race In the Dominion for. a long time when lie contests the King's £late, one mile at weight-for-age, at Ellerslie on Thursday of nest week.
