EX-SERVICEMEN'S LEAGUE

A most enjoyable function was given recently at the Eeereation. Ground, Lyall Bay, by the LyalLßay branch of the Ex-Servicemen's League ■' to the wives and children of the branch members. ■ . ■ , Mrs. H. H. Eudkin (patron) opened the function in the Scouts Hall, and during the course of her remarks congratulated the members on their achievements. _ Mr. Stanley (branch chairman) orcanisod some community singing among the children, after which all adjourned to the grounds, where a programme o£ sports for young and old was held. _ Mr. Stanley introduced Mrs., K. Semple, who congratulated league members on the success of their function. Little Shirley Grondin presented Mrs. Semple with a bouquet of roses conveying the compliments of the league. , A number of children gave song and elocution items, and after the arrival of Santa Claus by car each child received a gift from the tree and each mother a box of chocolates. • Tho sports meeting in the grounds was concluded by the ex-servicemen, s 100 yards championship cup race, which was won by Mr. Pugh. Mrs. Semple presented the prizes. A vote of thanks was given to Mrs. E. Semple and Mrs.H. H. Kudldn. • The prize-winners were Misses Mavis Caldor, Pew, Jack, Davies, June Calder; Masters Mathers, Cowie, Stanley, Cowie, Grondin; Mrs. Edinondson, Mrs. Nicholson, Mr, Pugh, and Mr. Cowie. . ~ .■'■■■'.■'■■:
