WHAT IS A PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT?

■ At a recent meeting of tho investigation committee of the New Zealand Society of Accountants^ a member gave aa opinion that a public accountant was under an obligation to have the fact that he was a public accountant shown on a sign at his place of business. This contention'was not upheld by the meeting. It was mentioned'that public accountants would ordinarily show a notice of their profession, but they were not under any legal obligation to do so. Tlio council of the society has adopted the following definition:—"A public accountant is a' person skilled in the affairs of commerce and finance, and particularly in the accounts relating thereto, who places his services at the disposal of the community for remuneration, but not entirely a,t tlio disposal of any one individual, firm, or corporation, and who maintains an office or place at which his services may bo engaged, and who is available at all times to undertake work oii behalf of the public,."-
