THE GAMBIT TOURNEYS

To provide au additional attraction for the members of the Wellington Chess Club during the months oC October and November three gambit tourneys were launched in September last. Good entries were received for these competitions which have jiist boon completed. In each, game the player having the: first 'move had to offer one of three gambits, Danish, Evans', or. King's—which his opponent had to- accept. T(ve expectation that some bright and enterprising, play would result from this experiment was fully borne, out. The prize in the A grade .tourney was annexed by G. P. Anderson, who won the Wellington League's champion of champions contest a year ago. He made the. good tally of S. wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. The runner-up was A. W. Gyles, the champion of the club and .present holder . of the league's champion of champions title. The prize.in t.hc.B grade and C grade gambit tourneys were won by Messrs. J. L. Hardy and-H. P. Yarrell respectively, each of whom scored the possible (7-0). These three prizes were presented on Saturday evening by the president, who mentioned that the Auckland Chess Club' is making arrangements to hold a gambit tourney"on similar lines. The club is indebted to Mrs. W. Mackay, of Karori, for a framed photo of her late husband, who was the club's president for 15 years, viz., from 1918 till his death in April last. This photo is to, be placed alongside that of the late Mr. C. W. Benbow, who was the club's president for -twenty-seven years, viz., from 1881 till his death, in March, 1908. ' WADESTOWN CLUB. The championship of the Wadestown Chess Club has been- won by Mr. R. A. Godtschalk. -who succeeded in scoring the possible (70). H. J. Fuller (6-1) and D. L. Roberts (5-2) filled the next two places. It may be added that Messrs. J. Morton, H. Godtschalk, and J. A. Connell were not competing on this occasion. The issue in the club's handicap tournament is now narrowed down to four players whose scores are as follows:—J. Morton 6-3 complete, D. L. Roberts 5-3 and one to play, W. Gardiner 4-3 and two to play, and R. A. Godtschalk 4-3 and 2 to play. A close finish is assured in. this contest. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. The tourney to decide this title is to begin in Dunedin on Boxing Day. There is a very representative entry, four centres in t he North Island contributing eight competitors between them, while four South Island centres are represented by the remaining six entrants. The Wellington nominations are Messrs. A. W. Gyles, G. P. Anderson, E. E. Hicks, R. G. Didsbury, and F. K. Kelling. It is hoped that Messrs. Anderson and Kelling will be abfe to take part. At the moment, they are the only competitors labelled "uncertain."
