ERRATIC WOMAN
DISCIPLE OF GANDHI
ARRESTED IN CALCUTTA
CALCUTTA, December 7. A wayward American disciple of '■Gandhi, whose alleged wcrldliness caused her to be expelled from Gandhi's ashram, has caused a fresh hubbub in Calcutta. At one time she stood second only to her fellow white woman, Miss Slade, in the estimation of Gandhi. Recently she astonished "India with a confession of misdeeds, but after she was forgiven, she returned 'to the retreat at Ahmedabad. A few. days ago she appeared at Delhi's best hotel, where she said she was Janet Gaynor, the cinema star, and declared she had been robbed of a thousand pounds sterling. ■ * Today she arrived at Calcutta by train, having discarded her saree for a. coat and skirt. She declared she was travelling without a ticket, as she had no money. The police called and she wag served with a summons, which she tore up, and asked to see the American Consul. Ho refused to have anything to do with her, and she is now detained under police surveillance.
