TWO ENTERTAINMENTS

The Town Hall was a very busy place on..Saturday aiteinoon, and evening. The Smith Family organisation had possession for an afternoon party for children, and for an "International Joy Night".in the-evening. The "international" character in the evening was given by Messrs. Laurie Sweetapple and Jack Chandler, who ap* peared as travellers who were to visit many parts of the world, .and in doing so presented to the audienqe dances and othfer entertainment from tho various places. .Clever dance items wero provided by Kathleen O'Brien and pupils, DdprthyTand Edward Parlette and pupils,! end by a charming number of children :inf'TheT Toy Barracks,?' Mr. Hanson Cook gave songs in good style,: , and Miss Gracie Kerr recited most '7successfully. 7' An attractive "apache. dance was contributed by Margaret O'Connor and W. E f Priestley, and charming songs,were sung by, Miss Kathleen Ferris, Mr.' Douglas Hogg, and Bay Tfewefn. A Polish dance by Alexander Grant proved an outstandingly good item, and a Javanese dance by JoanTßaine was also fticoly executed. All the items were excellently performed, and the programme was remarkable for its excellence...Tho dressing of the various ballets showed "artistic, tasto of a.high order, and the '.poetry of colour, was-as .well exemplified as the. "poetry of motion."1 All the teachers of dancing, as, well as those of song and elocution,'were heartily congratulated on the success'of their efforts, which mado possible the presentation of such an excellent programme. Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Bledisloe wero present, with Captain Tweedie and Lieut. Elworthy, A.D.C.s, in attendance. Her' Excellency wore a charming gown of palo green and a cloak of green and gold lame, and with them was Mrs. Bernard Wood, who wore gold lace and a short black velvet coat. ' THE CHILDREN'S PARTY. The children's part of the Smith Family entertainment on ' Saturday passed^offi very happily, thero being a large gathering of children and parents, and a charming entertainment was presented by Misses Kathleen O'Brien, Peggy Welch, Maud Farrant, Dorothy Daniels, Phyllis' Oliver, Lottie Bastall, Mr. Claude Sanders, and their clever and well-trained pupils. Brightly-frock-ed ballets'and pretty scenery were greatly enjoyed by tho children, and the suitable and well-planned entertainment reflected credit on all the producers. There were stalls for cool drinks and ices, which added much to the pleasure of the afternoon. Those who assisted with the arrangements wero Mrs, B. B. Wood (who distributed prizes), Mrs. TE. W. Kano and Mrs..Morton Paterson (judges), Mrs: Murray Litchfield, Mrs. Sinclair Thompson," Mrs. J.; Vogel, Misses Monica Malfroy, Geraldine; Litchfield, Mary Paterson, and some of the Toe H boys. The prize-winners in tho costume parade' wero Joan Lack (a red rosebud), Eileen Wyatt' (old-time lady), Avis White (rose fair), Doreen Gundry (crinoline lady). Daniel Spence and Peggy Andrews, as "green peas," won the prizo for the most' original couple. Other winners ,were Harold and Douglas Forster (soldiers) and Fred Akel (sheik). ..■■"'.'
