VALUABLE WORK DONE
A matter of interest reported at a Tccont meeting of tho Mayoress's Unemployment Committee. Avas that the expected return of factory employees had not taken place, many being employed till after Christmas, as showing au improvement in conditions. . The demand for domestics, as usual at this season, exceeded the supply. Tho bureau had, however, filled 20 permanent positions, 18 temporary, and 19 casual applications. Cases handled during the month numbered 178. Thirty-one women passed through the workroom and kitchen, and ten were subsidised in domestic situations. Thirty factory girls each day availed themselves of the committee's offer of meals to those who are earning 12s per week or less. A number of articles of clothing (frocks, etc.) were distributed to those in need. The stenographers' praetiee room had been used intermittently by an average of six girls. Pour of tho registered girls had been in hospital, and those were regularly visited by Mrs. Johnston, who had taken fruit, etc., to them. The shop committee, took charge of the Bureau Lounge for two days and held a very effective display of work dono by unemployed women, goods to tho amount of £7 being sold. Invitations numbering 156 have been forwarded to women, and girls for a Christmas dinner, high tea, and concert on Saturday next. A notice has also been posted in the dining-room asking for names of those who will be glad to attend tho party. About SO acceptances have already been received. The members of the kitchen committee will be in charge, and Mrs. Martyn Williams is arranging the concert. On behalf of the shop committee, Mrs. Jameson reported that £28 had been taken during the past five weeks. It has been decided to close the shop from the evening of December 22 till January 3. The committee received notice to vacate the present shop, and the City Council has given permission to use one at 5a Dixon Street (neaithe" King's Theatre), and the reopening will take place there. It is proposed to take a permanent helper from the bureau to relieve those voluntary workers who have given their services during tho past two years. - '
