BANK OF NEW ZEALAND

AN IMPORTANT APPOINTMENT

Mr. H. R. Chalmers, chief inspector of the Bank of New Zealand, was yesterday appointed assistant general manager of the bank in succession to Mr. 11.I1. W. Dawson, now general manager. Mr. Chalmers joined the bank's service in November, 189P, at Te Awamutu. He is a native of Takapau, Hawke's Ba}', and was educated at St. John's College, Auckland. After service at To Awamutu, Mr. Chalmers was transferred to Hamilton, and subsequently to Hawera and Eltham, so that he had early first-hand knowledge of banking in its relation to the dairying industry. He was made accountant at Eltham in 1910, and afterwards was transferred to the bank's branch at Suva, Fiji, where an altogether different class of banking business had to be done. Then came the Great War and Mr. Chalmers joined up, leaving Now Zealand on active service as a private in the Rifle Brigade. He served in Egypt and on the Western Front and returned to the Dominion as a captain. On resumption of service with the Bank of New Zealand "Mr. Chalmers spent some time as relieving officer and afterwards was appointed accountant at Gisborne; and from there in 1921 he was transferred to the Auckland branch of the bank, where he became accountant in 1923. He was made manager of the Dannevirke branch in 1925, manager of Palmerston North branch two years later, and recalled to Auckland as assistant manager in 1928. In 1930 Mr. Chalmers was appointed manager at Auckland. He was called to Wellington as chief inspector early in this year, and yesterday his appointment as assistant general manager was made by the Board df Directors.
