CARD TOURNEYS
TO BE LEGALISED
LEGISLATION INTRODUCED
Under the Card Tournaments Begulation -Bill, which was introduced into the House of Bepresentatives last evening and read'; a first time, school committees and charitable,organisations are authorised.to hold card tournaments at which prizes are offered. ■The prizes offered arc not to be of a monetary nature, and the winning prize is not to■exceed £lin value. Not less than seven days' notice is to be given to 'the officer in charge of the nearest police office of the time and place fixed for the tournament, the admission fee or other.charges proposed to bo made, the prizes to be given, and the purposes to which the net proceeds are intended to be devoted.' If the Inspector of Police requests an audited statement within fourteen days of the receipts and payments of the tournament, the statement-, is 1 .to be supplied. . . ■ . No person is to be permitted to make any private gain out of any tournament. " There is provision for the granting of permission for a series of tournaments extending over a period of six months. When •the Bill was being introduced, the Minister of Justice (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe) said the measure was on the lines, of that introduced by Mr. E. McKeen (Labour, Wellington South). Mr. McKeen had made numerous representations to him on the subject, and^ he thought there was a general desire on the part'of school committees that the legislation should be .passed.' Me.
