UNEMPLOYMENT AMONG GIRLS

Speaking oil unemployment at the break-up function of the Wellington East Girls' College, Hiss A. M. Batham, the principal, said that personally she was glad to say that throughout the yea* slio had found very few cases of girls who had left school and were actually out of work. Her experience was that there had been many openings for girls,- especially for young ones who would be much better at school trying to get a little education; and she regretted to say that she thought in some cases at least that this had taken place at the expense of the older women. Far too many first-year girls had been taken away, which was a waste of money. Many of. the -older girls, present and past, particularly those who had passed their matriculation examination, had entered the Government. She had been able herself to place a number of girls who were still at scbebl. Miss Batham added that she did not think parents need be too concerned about their girls. A good all-round girl who had learnt, to think and had developed character and initiative would not be long out of work.. -'-•'. ' .
