THE HIGH SCHOOLS

GIRLS' COLLEGE

BREAK-UP CEREMONY

A NOTABLE GATHERING

The prize-giving ceremony of Wellington Girls' College was hold in the central hall at the oollege yesterday. Mr. G, Mitchell, chairman of the Wellington College Board of Governors, presided, and there was a notable gathering of those associated ■with the school at various stages of its history. Mr. Mitchell, in his introductory remarks, said that the board had been handicapped financially during /the past year, but had received valuable help from the organisations connected with the college and from many other friends and supporters, to all of whom, it was extremely grateful. He asked tho girls to realise the extent of the sacrifices that were made in many cases by parents, and to live up to the traditions of the school. Mr. Mitchell also paid a warm tribute to the principal, Miss V. M. Greig, and her staff. Miss M.' Richmond, the first lady member of the board and one of the foundation teachers, expressed pleasure at being present and spoke of her pride in the great institution the college had become. She also referred to the value of education in developing those qualities' which made for an enlightened public opinion. . Mrs. E. Dawson, who recently resigned from the presidency o£ the Old Girls' Association after occupying the position for over sixteen years, addressed the girls on traditions and their influence during school years and afterwards. Mrs. G. W. Forbes, wife of the Prime Minister, presented the school prizes, and Mr. R. Darroch the Palmer Essay prize awarded by the Navy League. Cheers were given for the speakers and the dux of the school, Nancy Bullen. Mrs. E. W. Kan», a member of the board, proposed votes of thanks to those participating in the ceremony and to all others who had made possible the success of the school year. Choruses were given by the combined scholars during the ceremony. PRINCIPAL'S REPORT, In her report Miss- Greig referred to the success of the golden jubilee celebrations and the inspiration which all who had taken part had received. The total enrolment during the year was 520, and the roll number had been well maintained, the average attendance being 93 per cent. Very few changes had been made in the personnel of the staff. In organising the work of the school an endeavour had been made not only to frame a syllabus to suit the divergent needs of girls of different capacities and dissimilar vocational destinations] but to afford facilities for all pupils so that they might be equipped as fully as possible not only to earn a living, if the need arose, but to live a full' and useful life. Miss Greig dealt comprehensively with the various phases of the school's activities, stating that in examination successes the school had put up a very fine record. Appreciative ,mention was made of the work of the Parents') Association and the Old GMs' Association, thetloyalty.?and.. l'-'vcilling.;''cp-opei-ation ofyyh,e'; staff : ,y>and.;,v pupils, the encouragement and courtesy of.> ; {;he Board of ;G^QWrnorS(":!a4d''->the efforts o£%ll othßrs who had shown practidkl interest in'the school.
