A GOOD SCHOOL

PRIZE-GIVING AT MARSDEN

HELPFUL ADVICE TO SENIORS

Adder! .interest was given the Marsden School's prize-giving at Karori yesterday afternoon by the presence of their Excellencies' the Govenior-Gener.il and Lady Blcdisloo. Ijis Excellency gave an.address and Lady Blcdisloe-distributed the prizes. The line hall nml gallery were tilled with parents .md friends of the girls, \\"ho made an imposing' phalanx in the hall, after acting as a. guard of honour to their Excellencies. The handsome blue curtains of the stage.were.set off by great jars of pink and pale yellow foxgloves and lupins, and in the centre was the huge table with books and cups and prizes tor- .learning and athletics. ' ' Her Excellency was in an artistic gown of eaii de nil georgette and lace, with touches of pink and mauve in ribbons and shoulder knot of flowers. Her hat was exactly to match, and was a wide-brimmed one .of Baku ■ straw. • Miss Mayhew (principal), read the list, and each member of the staff came forward and handed the prizes to her Excellency for their own classes, and at the end of the proceedings hey Excellency requested that all should be presented to her. On the platform, besides their Excellencies (who were attended by Lieut. Elworthy, A.D.G.) were--the Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sproft), Mrs. Sprott, Miss Babor, and the members of the "Board of Governors. The Bishop gave a Urief introductory address and congratulated Miss Mnyhew on her good administration under difficult circumstances. Miss Mayhew, in presenting her report, spoke of' those difficulties and said that they had not affected the girls or the quality of tlfe work done. The fact was that 'most girls were learning tji appreciate the benefits of education better than they did years ago, though there were always those who.were content to do as little as possible, but they were, few in comparison. The University Entrance Examination results were good, and this year seventeen more had entered for the same examination. Other work had been as well done and results were good. Miss Mayhew said she felt there was'a sincerity in all the teaching which made it successful and valuable. The health of the boarders had been excellent, and although there had been a rather general epidemic of measles in the city and district, they had escaped, largely owing to careful precautions, only the Kitzkerbert Terrace branch having any considerable loss of time for this cause." Miss Mayhew spoke of changes in the staff. They were losing four members this year, but she felt that she had been very fortunate in replacing them, although they would be personally missed,, and there was much regret in parting'with them. In reference to the girls who were leaving 'Miss Mayhew spoke of the different standards of j life, they had to face, and of the problems i which made difficulties for (hem. She said she felt they needed a definite standard to be given them for their help and guidance.. The conduct of prefects showed that however careless a girl might be when she had no,responsibility, when she was given something definite, she rose to the occasion, and did good work. She trusted that it would be the same when they Tvent ovit into the world. "She hoped that the older:.people would:never fail the younger ones,- but pjiss pn to them the .'ideals of loyalty and .service which were" a.heritage from .the past. ■; . .. '. -.' PRIZE LIST.
