LATE SPORTING

ON TRENTHAM TRACKS

PREPARING FOR HOLIDAYS

AUTOPAY AGAINST WATCH

(By "Rangatira.") j The approach of the first of the holiday meetings is adding a' brisker touchjto the work at Trentham now, and quite a number of fast gallops were re* corded this morning. • The centre, besides being represented by Ked Sun and Epigram at Ellerslie, will hare a dozen runners at Awapuni, and several more horsts will come in for the- Wairarapa and Marton Meetings at the New Tear. JThe- tracks at present, in. common with other courses, ,are ,very dry and hard as the result of the hot weather. Watering-of the course proper is being resortea to every night, a maa being 'kept on duty for this purpose. The plough was iused' this morning, and it. was easy after watering. Pegged Exchange (A. Leach)' beat the two-year-old Barnum (J. D. Martin) by half a length over a fast half-mile in 49Jsee. The- former will not Tace till Marton, and the latter, who has no engagements,' may be reserved for Australian racing later on. Palm Queen (W. E. Sha'nd) finished a short neck in front of Cape Fair (G. F. Dick) at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 32teec, the last halfmile in 53-Jsee, neither being fully extended. Both these mares look in gre.'it fettle after their Auckland racing, and they will make their next appearance at Awapuni., Palm CJueen -will be the Cup candidate. • ■ Tutor (Martin) was doing it easily alongside Valdarado (D. Milier) at the end o£ half a. mile in 51sec.. Tutor has grown into a very.attractive youngster and he may not be far short of top class at the close of the season. There i^ a belief at Trontham ..that Mr. Y. Riddiford "will not sell this colt or Whyte Melville (Hunting Song—Merit colt), but if they are retained they will probably not be trained after month, at Trentham. • ' ■ ■ . Might (J. K. Robertson) ran over six furlongs pleasingly in lmin 18sec, the last half-mile in 52sec. ' SecTeey (J. T. Young) went five furlongs comfortably in lmin Csec. Forestry (F. W. Boxall) cantered a round, then did a round of pacing. The unraced two-year-olds Cape Morn (G. Eidgway) and Orby's Last (A. Ridgway), who may also go to Australia later on as they are not being nominated here, ran half a milo together, the former especially doing his work well. Araios (H. Crawford), who recently returned from.a fairly long spell, which appears to haye -benefited him, did an ed,sy six furlongs in lmin 25sec. Morbtiry (A. Ridgway) and Wahroonga (G. Ridgway) slipped over half a mile in just worse than-49Jsec, both working well.' ' Te Ua (R. Morris) was a good neck in'front of Joio de Val (Shand) at the close of seven furlongs in lmin 31sec, the. last half-mile in 52scc. These horsei will probably not race till the Wairarapa Meeting. ; Eminent (Martin) finished very solidly to. beat Flower (Robertson) by a good half-length over six furlongs in lmin lTJse'c, the last, half-mile in 51Asec. Eminent is due to resume racing at Tauherenikau on New Tear's Day. He is very well, but his hock, though it does not appear to trouble, him1; is very big. Colossical (J. I. McCauley) came along well in the straight to finish- on terms with Quietly (Shand), with Zetes (Miller) tailed off, after running five furlongs in lmin. 2Jsec, the last halfmile in 50see. Colossical had a very light lad in the saddle, but the time made the gallop a good : one for both him and Quietly. Neither will "be racing till the New Year. Autopay (A: Jenkins) was escorted aiong to the five furlongs by. Roderick Dhu (Martin) and Lyrical (Robertson), and after some delay he led them away and all the way to the post, finishing three lengths ahead of Roderick Dhu, with Lyrical another four lengths away. He took lmin 4sec for . the five and 51Jsec for tho last half, but he was always galloping determinedly. He is'to resume at Awapuni. Roderick D.hu waf nbt disgraced, and ho may earn some raonoy over the short distances \at Mal'ton. ', • Normandy and Sunee, who' are not racing over the holidays; did- solid pacing. ' The sanie tasks were allotted to Pahu, wno may contest the Wairarapa Cup, Bay Area, Loveeorut, Purse, and , the ■ after-breakfast workers. Two newcomers at the tracks are a pair of unraced geldings whom C. Pritchard has received from the north to train for a Wellington sportsman. One is a six-year-old bay gelding by Glen Alb3'n from a Formative mare, and the other is a seven-year-old brown gelding by Lucullus^ from a . Spalpeen mare. They will be prepared for jumping. Chilo; one of the centre's few hurdlers in the makings, has' been turned out temporarily for a spell.
