TO STOP SMUGGLING
LIQUOR FOR U.S.A.
REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT
United Press Association—By Electric TeleEraph—Copyright. (Received December IC, 3 p.m.) WASHINGTON, December 15. The Government today ordered the pavy to co-operate with the coastguard in stopping rum-running on the Pacific Coast. This step has been taken in reply to what the Government regarded as a challenge to its law enforcement facilities by a freighter lying off the Californian coast with a liquor cargo. A firm of shipping agents telegraphed to the Government that the British freighter Mogul was lying off the west coast laden with approximately 40,000 eases of Canadian and European liquors, and desired entry at the port of Los Angeles to place its merchandise in a warehouse subject to sale in accordance with liquor import quotas. The message declared that if the cargo was landed smuggling would cease in six months, as otherwise the liquor was destined to be landed illicitly. The Government, in rejecting the offer, declared that it was prepared to guard all tho coast against rum-run-ning. ______^^___
