RAIN PROMISED

FINE SPELL ENDING

The prospects of fairly generalrain developing during the weekend are more favourable (or unfavourable according to the point of vi«-,v) than they have been for some time, states the forecast issued at noon today. A depression which now covers the western Tasman Sea is the most, intense experienced for a considerable period, and it is expected to cause cloudy and unsettled conditions from Taranaki southwards, with scattered rain in Otago. Conditions over the remainder of the Dominion will continue to be mainly fair to fine at first, with warm temperatures, but with increasing cloud. Unsettled weather is expected to overspread the Dominion during tomorrow i and Sunday. Moderate to strong < northerly winds are anticipated andthey will reach gale force in places. - An anticyclone still extends across northern New Zealand far to the eastwards, but since last night a slight westerly depression has been crossing the South Island. The- latter has been responsible for freshening northerly winds, but the rainfall associated with it has been confined to the Foveaux Strait area, and even there it has been only light. Over the . remainder •of the D6niinion the weather has continued to be fair and warm. At .Auckland yesterday the morning ■ was sunny but the afternoon was cloudy. Temperatures continued warm with a light north-easterly wind. Wellington had a rather cloudy morning but, as a whole, fine warm weather prevailed. A fresh northerly wind blew all day. The amount of bright sunshine recorded was 11.4 hours, and the maximum temperature was 70.1deg. In Christchureh it was fine and sunny in the morning, but cloudy in the afternoon. An east-north-east breeze prevailed. It became very warm after 4 p.m., the temperature reaching 77deg. Dunedin had a hot day, with bright sunshine in the morning, but cloudy conditions in the afternoon. The wind was a light north-easterly.
