JAMES EXECUTED
Sentenced to death for the murder on June 30 last of Mrs. Cecilia Smith, George Edward James was executed at the Mount Crawford prison this morning. Since being informed last Tuesday that the death sentence would be carried out, the condemned man was resigned to his fate. Up to the very last he received spiritual consolation from Brigadier D. Macaulay and Adjutant H. Eive, of the Salvation Army. James slept well last night and submitted quietly to being pinioned. The procession from the condemned cell to the scaffold was headed by the Sheriff (Mr. ,W. W. Samson), then came the superintendent of the prison, two war-; ders, two Salvation Army officers, the condemned man and the chief warder, the hangman, and' representatives of the Press. James mounted . the scaffold unaided, and less than three minutes elapsed from the time the procession left the cell until the bolt was drawn. When asked just before the white cap was drawn over his face if he had anything to say, James replied: "Good-bye,- everybody. May God have mercy on my soul." After the expiration of an hour the black flag, was hauled down, signifying that the law's formalities had been duly complied with. -
