CLOSING OF SHOPS

The following suggested hours for the closing of shops during the Christmas and Jsew Year holidays have been announced, and as far as is knowii at present, the proposals will bo adhered to:— The Grocers' Federation will observe their late night on Friday and their ha If-day on Saturday. This will also apply to chain stores. The majority of the various classes of retailers in the city of Wellington and the suburbs will observe Saturday as the half-day and Friday as the late night. "The butchers will observe close holidays on the Mondays and Tuesdays (December 25 and 26 and January 1 and 2). As far as the week preceding Christmns is concerned, some of the butchers' shops will close on Saturday and some on Wednesday. It is probable that the shops which usually keep open on. Saturday afternoons will do so during the holidays, and the same with those which keep open as a rule on Wednesday afternoon. Tobacconists close on only one weekday, i.e., Christmas Day. Except for a half-holiday in the week before Christmas and in New Year week, they keep open at any time which suits their particular business. Therefore, on the Saturday before Christmas, on Boxing Day, the Saturday before New Year, New Year's Day, and January 2, tobacconists will be open for business till a late hour to meet the requirements of tho public.
