THE RECENT CHANGES
"Just a Listener," in the course of a letter too long to publish in full, criticises the Government's policy in purchasing ■ B class stations. He recalls the Postmaster-General's extraordinary statement that New Zealand was able to use only a small part of the broadcasting band [it is, of course, the fact that New Zealand can use the whole of it, subject to the necessity of dodging a few powerful Australians] and suggests that the congestion can be reduced by cutting down the powerful harmonics now radiated. [2YA has a wonderful second harmonic output; what a pity it cannot be used for a separate programme!] Regarding the alternative service, he remarks that 2YC is not providing an equivalent for the service it has replaced. For instance, it does not start the breakfast session till 7.30, and while IYA begins at 7 a.m., it is absurd to suggest that this is of any use in Wellington, as very few receivers will make it audible.
