PRIZE-GIVING

EAST GIRLS' COLLEGE

MISS BATHAM'SREPORT

A total roll number during the year of 407 was reported by Miss A. M. Batham, the principal, in her review or. this year's ivork at Wellington; East Girls' College, at the prize-giving ceremony «n the *St. John Ambulance Hall this afternoon. The average attendance had been good 6n the whole, she said, although the latter part of the year the attendance had been affected badly by the prevalence in Wellington of measles, mumps, and influenza. There had been an increase in the numher of first-year pupils, continued Miss Batham. The post-matriculation' class, however, had been much- smaller, due partly to the fact that a number of matriculated girls had found little ■ difficulty in procuring positions of some kind; while others, turned away for'the present from thinking about teaching, were taking allday courses at commercial schools to qualify for offices. She was glad a number of the senior girls returned and carried on their commercial course, and, at the same time, qualified for their higher leaving certificate. Miss Bjathatn gave a resume of examination results, mentioning in particular the success achieved by Myra King, dvi of last year, Clare Childs, Betty Johnstone, Nonna Morey, and Patricia Edwards. She was glad to say that the Education Department had again allowed, the senior free place to be awarded by recommendation. This had relieved much of the usual stress at the end of the year. It was a matter for regret, however, that a number of girls who -were recommended at the inspectors' visit in July had since left school and were not continuing their education. This was hard on others who she knew were very keen to continue, but were not, perhaps, up to senior free place standard at the time, and probably would not pass the examination held last month., SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS. Comments made by Miss Batham on education for girls,l unemployment^-etc., are reported ' under separate •': headings. Miss Batham alsO; referred at some length to, school activities in sports, the Junior. Red Cross and Student Christian move-' ments, and in- social service.' Many improvements /had, been made in and about the school, and gifts had enabled some very good additions to be made to the library. Ex-pupils of the school had been doing some very good work at the university, a large number had entered the Government, service, one girl had just passed her post-graduate course in nursing, and otherg had , become successful, &irse«;,,i Anptter,>;iMaiie Power-Collins, won the Kingsford Smith Aviation Scholarship, and four others entered the Dental Clinic as trainees at the beginning of the year. Miss Batham said she hoped all girls "* leaving would try to join up with one or more of the activities of the old girls. This year, continued Miis Batham, the; had sent to^the Board of Governors for; approval the name of Naomi Hartill to be the holder of the Sarah Antes Scholarship for 1934. Naomi Hartill had done excellent all-round work in VIB, and they hoped to see her try for : a University Entrance Scholarship at the end of next year. The Daisy Small special prizei were given to fifth form girls, personality, character, and general proficiency being taken into consideration. This year the board had approved of their being awarded to Jean Buckingham and Mabel Watts, both of Form VA/ Modern. In conclusion Miss Batham thanked all who had assisted the college in many different ways, and wished, parents, friends, and girls a happy Christmas and a good New tear. / SPECIAL PRIZES.
