LORD DERBY'S TRAINERS

According to a cnble to Australian I papers, Mr. Colledge Leader, a member of the noted Turf family, will replace the Hon. George Lambton as trainer for Lord Derby, who now explains that there was no trouble between Lambton and himself, but he considered that the control of his large stable might prove an undue strain on Mr. Lambton's health. Mr. Leader, who was formerly trainer for the late Earl of Harewood, is a strict churchgoer, and insists on his stableboys going to church on Sundays. He is now fifty years of age. As a -jockey he met with considerable success, and when increased Weight caused him to retire from the saddle he became a trainer. Among the. I'orses with whom he won in England was Simeon's Eort, who was exported to Australia, where he captured the A.J.C. Doncaster Handicap in 1928. The following report appeared in English papers nbout six Tveeks ago:—"A-sen-sation has been caused in racing circles by the fact that the Hon. George Lambton, after having trained Lord Derby's horses for forty years, will cease io train for that owner at the end of the year. Lord Derby says that the decision to part with Lambton entails no criticism of the trainer's ability. Among. the team this year is Hyperion, winner of the Derby and St. Leger. Lambton said that he was surprised at the decision. Although seventy-three years of age, he has no intention of retiring, and is looking for an' establishment to set up as a public trainer." Lambton was the trainer of Lord Derby's horses for a lengthy period, but a few years ago he retired, though retaining a supervising position, while acting as manager for Lord Derby, the actual training being, done by F. Butters. This arrangement did not satisfy all concerned, and Lambton resumed charge of Lord Derby's team about three years ago.
