COUNCIL PASSES BILL

The Transport Law Amendment Bill was put through, all stages by the Legislative Council last evening. , , In moving the second reading, the Minister of Education (the Hon. E. Masters) said that the Bill made provision for the setting up of a transport co-ordination board, which would advise the.' Government on ; the possibility of co-ordinating all forms of transport. At the; present time there was £122,00(1,000 invested in the different forms of transportation, and/there was an urgent need for the elimination of overlapping and waste which were adding to the overhead charges of the Dominion. The bovd would also hear the appeals arising from the administration of the principal Act.. ..The,Bill also gave the Minister power to reduce the central licensing authority- to one member. . The Hon. C. J. Carrington said that the legislation was a forward step in the solving of' the transport problem. The Hon. W. H. Mclntyre said that unless the different forms of transport were co-ordinated the trade of the country would suffer. He welcomed the Bill. The Hon. R. McCallum protested against the expenditure of unemployment funds on highways competing with the railways. The railways were public property and should be protected. , .-
