A special tribunal at Lahore, after a trial extending over three years, inflicted heavy sentences on a gang of terrorists for a series of crimes in the Punjab and elsewhere. Two were sentenced to death, three to transportation for life, and eleven to terms of imprisonment with hard labour ranging from two to seven years. Five were acquitted. The accused formed an organisation in 1926, called theI*"Hindustan1 *"Hindustan Republican Army," with the aim of securing the freedom of India. Bombs ■ and ammunition were obtained. The first crime was an attempt to wreck the special train of the Viceroy, then Lord Irwin, in December, 1929, when bombs, were laid on the railway line near Delhi, but were discovered i.n time to prevent disaster.
