The most extensive fir© in the city's recent history, alter gutting the LawCourts building and destroying {he archives, was only prevented by a strong gale from reaching'the Mosque of "St.. Sophia, The flames reached a point only teg. yards distant.
The early Christian gold mosaics of the mosque were only recently, restored.

Soldiers escorted the inmates of an adjacent prison to; safer custody.
