LIFE-SAVING COUNCIL

FIRST ANNUAL MEETING

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR

The-first-annual meeting of the New Zealand Surf Lifersaving Association was held in the Maranui clubroom last week. There were present Messrs. P. Coira (chairman), S. Muller, N. A. Ingram, W. Gerrie, J. Millburn, and A. Eoss.

An apology was received from Mr. F. Chapman (secretary), who was absenton business in the South Island. . Mr. J. M. Braid, of the Foxton Surf Club, was welcomed to the meeting. In moving the adoption of the annual report, Mr. Coira said that the association was to be congratulated on the success attained since its formation (under charter of the Dominion Council, R.L.S.S.). There was no doubt that surf work in the Dominion had at long last been placed on a definite footing, and the future prospects of the association were more than bright. The indications were for a -very heavy and successful year, and it was most gratifying to know that all the district surf associations- wer-e affiliated to the national organisation. The reports from the West Coast-of the South Island indicated a lively interest in surf work, with, the possibility of the opening of .two more clubs. The past year had been a most strenuous one in view of the remodelling of tho constitution and ■ the revising of the form of drill, and he congratulated the clubs on the keen interest they were displaying in the new drill. He felt sure that when the New Zealand championships were held in Auckland early in the New Year the demonstrations of the various competing clubs would be of a high staadard, despite the relatively short period allowed for the change-over in the drill". He desired to make special reference to the affiliation of the Canterbury Surf Association with the council. This was one of the greatest steps forward that could have been accomplished. There now remained the consolidating of the interests of the individual surf clubs with their respective surf associations, and the whole organisation would progress rapidly, -

Mr. Eoas stated that he had been instructed by the Taranaki District Surf Association, to extend congratulations to the council on the progress made and appreciation of the very -valuable and voluminous work done by the special subcommittee on revision. Mr. Gerrie said' that the Wanganui Surf Association also desired to be associated with the congratulations to the council and the sub-committee on the result of the year's operations. The work of the secretary of the council (Mr. Chapman) called for special notice. Messrs. Muller (Auckland), Millburn (Otago), and Ingram (Wellington) also congratulated and thanked the committee for its'work in revising the rules of drill. SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS. It was decided that the national surf championships be held •at .Auckland in 1934,, but no definite date was fixed. On rewjiyfc of definite advice the council will consider the position and fix the date and teach on which the championships will be leld. ... The council expressed pleasure at the \6ecision of the Wellington Surf Association to hold a demonstration of the new dfill on December 17, so as to afford an opportunity to the local board of judges to study the :finer. paints of the drill. The local members of • the council decided to attend the demonstration. The council considered the question of creating still, further interest in the Hawke's Bay district, and,the matter, was referred to a special committee consisting f the president,l vice-president, and sec•tary. ■ i ■'.
