SCRAP-IRON FOR JAPAN
QUESTION IN HOUSE
In the House of Representatives today Mr. W. E. Barnard (Labour, Napier), asked the Prime Minister whether he had satisfied himself as to the general.use t'6' which the scrap-iron purchased by Japanese agents in this country for export to Japan was being put; and whether any New' Zealand State Department was disposing of scrap-iron to Japan. A recent Japanese visitor to the Dominion had declared that the iron was unsuitable for, and was not being used for, armament purposes. Mr. Forbes replied that it was understood that the iron, was 'being used for commercial purposes. The Railways Department was taking advantage of Iho position to dispose of scrap-iron.
