SECOND OFFENCE
INTOXICATED MOTORIST
Stated by Senior-Sergeant Dempsey to have-been fined £10 and to have had his driving licence cancelled for a year in 1931 for having boon in charge of a car while in-a state, of intoxication, John ClifEord Kershaw, aged 29, a clerk, appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today on a similar charge and, pleading guilty, ho was fined £25 and had his licence cancelled for three years. Ho was allowed a month hi which to pay the fine. Senior-Sergeant Dempsey said that the defendant had hired a car last night. At 3 a.m. today a constable saw him enter the car in Farish Street. . With another constable he approached and found the- defendant trying to start the, car. They asked him to step out of the car and it was then" seen that ho was in an intoxicated condition. He was taken to the Taranaki Street police station and examined by a doctor, who certified to his condition. Mr. W. Perry said that Kershaw had not been driving the car for a considerable time beforo he was apprehended, and he submitted that a fine and cancellation of the driving licence would mectthe case.
