The afternoon was gloriously flue and conditions ideal for croquet, but whether it was the fact that there was a large gallery of spectators or that it was the first match of the season it was certain that none of the players were playiug .up to formi Mesdames '.Caldow and Moeller after, many good opportunities which neither made over good use. of, suceeedodj in, reaching 4 back with Mrs. Thomas's clip on No. 4, and Mrs. Manton's on No.. 5. Prior to this stage none of the players were shooting well but Mrs. Manton saved the situation more than once by getting in'good shots where tliey were most- needed and was the first to reach the peg. Mrs. Moeller, then made determined efforts to peg out this ball but as the opportunities were none too favourable did not succeed, the holders still retaining the §tars, the score, being 26-11. In the case of a cannon shot if. tho croqueted ball be sent off the court the shot must cease even though a roquet has been made (Eule 33d). In this case both the roqueted ball and the striker's ball remain where they come to rest. The only instance in which the turn shall not cease when the croqueted ball is sent off the court is in the case of a rover being pegged out on a croquet stroke and at the same time sent off the court. Wanganui Inquiry. (Eule 44a) In level play after a player has made four back the opponent may, if desired, take cither ball to balk. -If, however, a player pegs out either his own, partner, or opponent's ball, that player or partner, forfeits this right when the opponent makes four back.
