(From "The Post's" Special Reporter.)] PALMERSTONN., This Day. Dull, threatening weather eai-ly yester* day gave way to heavy rain later in the morning for the .opening; of Jhe forty* eighth Agricultural Show and Industrial Exhibition of the Manawatu and Wesb Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Associa» tion-at the Show Grounds, Pahnerstou North. The heavy rain, ceased shortly]' after 11 a.m., but light rain fell dur». ing the remainder of the day. The un« ' pleasant conditions were, however, rek • lieved by the mild spring atmosphere. Despite the present time*of financial stress and perplexity there was evidenca' over the whole ground of an intention to make this show a notable and worths; one. Early in the morning large crowd* arrived by train, bus, and car, and by tha afternoon, the customary half-holiday ,in Palmerston North, the gathering had assumed large proportions. Visitors, whether young or old, found, plenty to interest them. Side-shows provided aye« nues for the spending of money, and amusement for the children, and in many cases' for the grown-ups, too, was provided by merry-go-rounds and similar forms of entertainment. INCREASED ENTRIES. A comparison of the entries this yest, with those of last year is unimportant* because last year's fixture was a Royal show. Compared with the figures of tha spring show in 1931, the entries this year, show an increase. The association ia quite satisfied ; with the number of ex« hibits, and given fine weather its officera expect the show to be a success. There are 318 entries in the cattle section, 378 in the sheep, 381 in' the horse, 165 in tha pig, 200 in the art and fancy needlework, 532 in. the home industries, 67 in tha photographic, 2236 in the art, technical* and public schools' division, and 6 in thai models section, making a total of 4283.J The schools division'exhibits were judged on Tuesday. The judging of the homfj industries, needlework, photography, arts and model sections took place yesterday^ and considering the large number of en« tries in these classes, the officials are to) be congratulated on the harmony whicli: existed and; the dispatch with which ths various sections were disposed of. Thai judging of stock was confined yesterday} to the pig section. This section is quita a representative one, and the exhibits are of a high quality. Reference to thia section is made under separate headings. " FARMING DEVICES. A feature of the show this year is'..thaV fine display of agricultural' machinery! and implements, many of which are shtfwnj ■ working. The very latest in harvesters,/ tractors, separators, and other- adjuncts to farming are to be seen. Completa arrangements by trade exhibitors enabled' the sections to be well displayed, and tha many attractively set up stalls were thaj subject of favourable comment. ' In the afternoon interest was conceiw trated on the maiden jumpers'; competi* tion and the steer riding contests. Tha latter proved Terjr popular, arid" despita fairly heavy tain at the time, the bank surrounding the ring was lined with! people, who at times were'worked up tqf a high pitch of excitement. Generalljj] the riding was of: a high: standard. There was a large attendance. of th(| public in the evening. i '
