WOMEN AT BELMONT

The form shown in the women's national meeting at Belmont was remarkably good. Amongst the younger players Miss Helean (CastleelifE) provided some surprises, beating Miss Aicheson (Nelson) 6 and 5 with the remarkable card of 77. Miss Helean, who is a long driver, did a 78 at Miramar, moreover, in very rough weather, probably a better achievement than the Belmont 77. Miss W. Barns-Graham (Gisborne), holder of the Wellington provincial championship, was all squaro with the skilled and powerful Hawarden golfer, Miss B. Rutherford, in the North v. South Island match, took Now Zealand's best (Miss Kay) to. tble nineteenth in the championship, and established a course recorA by two strokes, breaking the record of Mrs. Cook (CastleelifE) of 76 the previous Frida--with a 74, as follows: —544544434 —37; 353553445 —37. Miss Gaisford showed her quality in beating Miss Kay in the North v. South match 3 and 2, and, putting out successively Miss M. Beadel, Miss Fleming, Miss Eathbone, Mrs. Collinson, and Miss Currie to bo beaten by Miss Kay in the final. Miss Kay defeating successively Miss 0. Smith, Miss Johnston, and Miss Grace, had perhaps an easier run than Miss Gaisford in the championship, until sho met Miss Barns-Graham. Miss Kay had a comparatively easy win from Mrs. Stout. For the eighth year in succession Miss Kay won tho Mellsop Cup, which goes to the best aggregates in the Donnelly Gup, Coronation Medal, and L.G.U. challenge contests, Miss Kay's figures being 85, 78, and 79, total 242. It is interesting to note that the L.G.TJ. has decided to send Misses Kay and Gaisford to the next British women's open championship; It is ex- ' pected this Miss Barns-Graham will also be in England at that time, and will compete. Sho has shown herself as likely to do very nearly as well as the two official representatives, and without tho mental hazard of official | standing, she may do even better.
