RED CABBAGE
GROWN FROM SEED
A crop of red cabbage is always useful for pickle making. The seeds should be sown as soon as possible now, so that the plants come on for pickling after .the main rush of jam-making is over. The ground must be well manured and • worked; plenty of leaf-mould . and manure is essential to supply the young plants with fibrous roots. Without these they transplant badly. Sow thinly so that the young plants arc not crowded in tho seed bed. At planting out timo choose an open position, with tho ground heavily manured, and bury the stems of the young plants to their full depth so that the lower leaves arc almost on the surface. Allow from two feet to two foot six inches between tho plants each way. It is not wise io plant out more than will bo' required, as a few go a long way- : •
