DIESEL FOR CARS
EYSTON AT BROOKLANDS
OVER HUNDRED MILES AN
HOUR
(British Official Wireless.)
BUGBY, October 27. A car equipped with an ordinary London omnibus engine made a new world's record at Brooklands today when, in pouring rain, Mr. George Eyston broke the existing record of 100,75 miles per hour for the highest speed ever achieved by a Diesel-engined vehicle. Although the high wind find wetness of the track, necessitating the use of heavily ribbed instead of racing tires, tended to slow down the car, Eyston covered the flying mile over two runs at an average speed of 101.983 miles per hour. Over the kilometre the average speed was 104.86 miles hourly. The maximum speed of 106.647 miles hourly was attained over the second run of a kilometre.
