DOMINION'S * SACRIFICE

GIFT OF PAINTING

Advice has /been received from London by the Prime Minister, the Et. Hon. G. W. Forbes, that Lord Wakefield, of Hythe, has purchased for New Zealand Captain Longstafie's famous painting "Carillon," symbolising New Zealand's heroic sacrifice in the Great War. In a cable message to Mr. Forbes, the High Commissioner for New Zealand, Sir Thomas Wilford, states it is a magnificent picture, and that Lord Wakefield had written him asking the Prime Minister to accept it on behalf of the people of New Zealand. . Appreciation of the gift was expressed in the following cablegram dispatched yesterday to Lord Wakefield by Mr. Forbes: — ' ' "The High Commissioner for New Zealand has informed me of your most generous presentation of Captain Longstaff c's famous painting 'Carillon,' symbolising New Zealand's sacrifices in the Groat War. On behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand I have very great pleasure in accepting the painting, and desire to express to you our deep appreciation of your munificent gift, which constitutes further practical evidenco of your Lordship's continued interest in this Dominion. The picture will be hung in our new National Art Gallery, which building is now in course of erection, and will form a most appropriate and valuable addition to the Works of art to be housed therein." • An announcement of Lord Wakefield's handsome gift was made at yesterday's meeting of the board of trustees of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum by Mr. Forbes, who presided. Applause greeted the "announcement, and keen appreciation was expressed of his Lordship's generosity.
