PLUNKET SHIELD MATCHES
A NELSON PROTEST
The effect on the cricketing strength of minor associations through the withdrawal of players to ta^ke .part in the Plunket Shield matches of the major bodies . was indicated in a letter from the Nelson Association read at last evening's meeting of the Wellington Cricket Association. .. : . The1 Nelson Association pointed out that , the taking of players from that district to represent Wellington in Plunket , Shield matches would probably affect the Nelson Hawke Cup team. They. suggested that the Wellington Association-, should write to the players concerned to find out whether they1 were willing to represent Wellington in preference to taking the field for Nelson. ■ ' i Mr. W. J. R. Christophersen said that it would place the players in : an unfair position. "However, I don't think any minor association has- done .more to work with Wellington than Nelson," he said, "and the Nelson Association has a certain auiount of right in r wanting to.look after its own 'affairs." ; - The secretary (Mr. A. Varney) pointed out that a similar position ;would arise in connection with the Town v. Country match. It was no;gr ! selecting player* who were not available to take part in 'Plunket Shield matches. The chairman (Mr. P. B. Broad): They have sidestepped our request. ~lt means that now we shall have to approach the players .direct. '■: ,-■■■■ '.: It was pointed out that the Wellington Association had no legal control over th« minor associations. ■ The,same position might arise in connection with other associations. , It was* decided to approach the other minor associations and obtain their views on the question. In the meantime the matter will be held over. ' The meeting decided that the annual Town v. Country match should be played at Wellington on November 29 and 30. Owing to the weather conditions last Saturday some of the local games set/down to take place were not played. The meeting decided that, in all matches, last Saturday should be regarded as a day's play. The following fixtures were mdc for next Saturday:— : ■ ■-■ ' Junior B2.—lTutt v. Seatoun,, transferred from Kelburn Park to Hutt Park. Junior D.-^Hutt v. Midland, transferred from. Anderson Park, to Hutt Park. t ;■■ Third Grade.—Kilbirnie A v."Kilbirnie B.
