SURPRISE DEFECTIONS

THE N.Z. CUP ACCEPTANCE

POLYDORA AND TAKAKUA

Final acceptances for the opening day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Metropolitan Meeting on' Saturday,', also final payments for the Derby and Oaks, were made last evening, and in the New Zealand. Cup at least there'were a couple of surprise defections. Polydora and Takakua, ruling among the. favourites.' both dropped out, and their absence .now leaves a very moderate field of-thirteen to contest tinDominion's premier handicap. r ■ Polydora's failure 16 meet the'payment is due to the check; in her preparation caused by her having knocked herself while being.led along the road last Wednesday. Subsequent reports wore favourable.to her being,able. to start, but after working yesterday morning she showed* signs of soreness later in the day, and so ideas of winning the Cup with her had to be aban* idoned. ,': ' " . . /Whereas the non-acceptance of Polydora is not. a complete surprise, that of Takakua certainly is. A southern report states that it is due to no suitable rider's being obtainable, but there is probably rather more in It than this. v Oii the final day of the Wellington Meeting Takakua cut up in the straight, suggesting that, his recent racing might have temporarily found the bottom of him. Moreover, on two previous trips south lie-did badly, falling in his only race August twelve months ago, and Having to .be sent home°before the last August Meeting Was through owing to going off his feed.1 It. certjajnly. looks as if his connections do .notI.think that he is; at jpresent' up to. the solifL Curytest.. : '•■.-. The only-other, three to have- .droppedout of the -Gup are (already scratched), Speedmint (who is remaining: in' the north for the Auckland Meeting),; and Water 'Polo (hardly:' lip .to yCup. standard). ■' ~' :, . , ~: ! There is no sin-prise m the Stewards'; acceptance. . Cadland had already beenscratched, Gay' Sheila, who races in. the; same interests'as Speedmint, is remaining' in the north: for Ellerslie, and,; Souchong'sTrentham form hardly warranted his connections' going Son with.his engagement. ,-'; The disappointment of the acceptance is ; the i Spring Plate, for which onljr seven; horses have paid up. This has,customar-j ily been a large field, drawing a gopA class; of the specially-defined novice horse._'■_■ \ The acceptances, per Press 'Association; message, are-'as follows: — - ; .;
