UNUSUAL POSITION

WORK NOT WANTED

TECHNICAL SCHOOL GIRLS

"The position has now arisen where Tve find difficulty in supplying the immediate requirements of possiblo employers," stated the director of the Wellington Technical College (Mr. E. G. Eidling) in his report to the monthly meeting of the board of governors last night. "This is particularly the case with regard to girls. On the commer-j cial side the girls are working for public examinations in shorthand and typowriting, and arc disinclined to take up I positions which might interfere .with their prospect, anfl on the home science side the girls have other work in view.'' Amplifying this section of his report, Mr. Eidling said that a fortnight ago he had had applications for thirteen girls, but was unable to get one. One hosiery factory wanted six girls for machine work, and another girl was wanted who had had home science experience. In his report Mr. Eidling stated that since the beginning of the year employment had been found for 106 boys and 56 girls. ' "It is very creditable and shows that the employers are looking to this school ■when they want beginners," said the chairman. "It is very encouraging to the staff to find that this is so." NUMBERS ON THE ROLL. Tho director's return of students for .the monthly period ended Ocotber 14 showed that compared with the same period last year there was a reduction of 50 in the total number of individual enrolments in all branches of tho college. Although tlie enrolments had increased over the enrolments at July 24, 1933, tho number of students actually attending had fallen by 136. This was a characteristic reduction during the third term, and was due to the lowering of tho number attending the day school and not transferring to the evening school, and to slight reduction in attendance at art classes, which was common in tho third term of each year. The roll number of the day school on October 14 was 861. Tho detailed returns for each department showed a steady reduction in the evening classes in the art, trades, and domestic seienco departments. The continuation classes were practically the same as at the same time last year, and the commercial classes were som.ewhat stronger.
