THE SPANISH CLUB
On Thursday evening the weesly meeting of the Spauish Club's reading circle took place at the Chamber ot Commerce Translations from the latest Chilean and Argentine newspapers, together with an interesting passage from Rafael Cortina s "Viajepor Mejico y Cuba" occupied portion of the evening. Ricardo Dormers description from "La Prensa" or El legion "extranjero" gave an informative account of the famed French Legion regarded from the Spanish point of view. . Mem-, bcrs of philatelic bent were indebted to Mr Kins for the display of a. fine set ot pictorial stamps issued by one ot Britain s few South American possessions, Guiana. Spanish musical and dialogue recordings were the "piece de resistance." being the Argentine National Anthem, a spirited composition of exceptional musical^merit. The South American custonv of the "Yer.ba buena" or Paraguayan tea, was described by Mr. Goodwin and illustrated with a "mate" set in his possession, consisting of "Calabaza" and "bonbillo." Senor Gomez also explained the custom of the "matambre," an ingenious cooking utensil commonly used by peon labourers. As the evening marked the conclusion of the winter meetings of the circle for 1033, opportunity -\yas taken by Mrs. Hanvey to express in Spanish, on behalf of members present, appreciation of the work of the club's officers during the session, and particularly to the president, Mr. Goodwin, and to Mrs. ;Goodwjn. Thanks were also extended to Senor Gomez and Mr. Hunwick, whose years of experience in Spain and South America rendered their services invaluable both to the reading circle and to the study group.
