HIGH-CLASS PLAY

AUSTRALIANS AT HASTINGS

(By Telegraph.—Pr^ss Association.) HASTINGS, October 30. Patches 'of 'tennis of the very highest class were seen in exhibition gatneg played on the Hastings Club's courts this afternoon by the two Australian Davis Cup players, A. K. Quist and D. P. Turnbull, and the New Zeaknders, D. ft. Franceand N. R: C.' Wilson. Results are:— Turnbull beat Wilson,'G-3, 6-3. Quist beat France, 6-4, 6-2. Turnbull and Quist beat Wilson and France, 6-1, 7-5, 3-C, 7-5. It was very evident that the Australianswere riot ' at' any pains to provide fiveworks, and only occasionally did they allow themselves to be extended. They were apparently not in the mood to exert themselves unnecessarily, btit nevertheless their, display was very much worth seeing. The opposition did not at any time prove strong enough to threaten the Australians with defeat, and the matches resolved themselves into a more or less easy-going display on the part' of the Davis Cup players. At odd times France and Wilson showed touches, of .brilliance, and by skill, dash, and' tactical cunning, took points. In the doubles match France did not strike form until the second set, but from then on he showed tennis of high quality, particularly in overhead volleying and killing lobs. AVilson was always useful, 'especially at' -lire- net, and some of his placements from close up were exceedingly well thought out, and executed with a swiftness which made them winin ers on their merits.
