NEW YORK, October 30.
A message from New London, Con* necticut, states that a running battle took place between a coast-guard cutter and an alleged rum runner, the launch Frances, of Newport. In the fray; machine-gun bullets and one-pounder shells were exchanged. The battle reached a spectacular climax today; when the Frances, ploughing through her own smoke screen, was rammed by; a patrol boat and sank. Four men, comprising the Frances's crew, were take* prisoners. One is in a critical condition with gunshot wounds in the ab« domeii. The coast-guard vessel had ta be beached with a badly stovc-in bow. A cargo of 500 eases of liquor sank with the Frances. . • ■ .
