OBITUARY
M. PAUL PAINLEVE
FORMER PREMIER OF FRANCE
(.Received October 30, 1 p.m.) PARIS, October 28. The death is announced of M. Paul Painleve, a former Premier of France.
M. Paul Painleve was born in Paris in 186u and was educated at the Lycecs of St. Louis and St. Louis lo Grand, and at the Ecolo Normnle Supericure. In 1886 he became Profewsor of Science at Lille, and later hold appointment at the Sorbonno and the Polytechnic. In 1910 ho was elected to the Chamber of Deputies and became Minister of Education, President of tho Council, and President of the Chamber of Deputies. He was Minister of War in M. Poincare's Cabinet and the man who appointed Foch and Petain to their posts. Though he also became Premier of France ho always held his interest in mathematics, and ho wrote some jiotablo philosophic works, and was a member of the Academy. M. Doumergue defeated him for tho offico of President of France.
