VERY POORLY RIDDEN

THE DEFEAT OF WINOOKA

BALTIMORE, October 2S.

In defeat, Winooka gave an impressive performance in the six-furlong race at Laurel, in which he finished third yesterday, for he was poorly ridden by the stable jockey, E. Britt.

Ridden by an experienced jockey, Winooka might have obtained the victory, experts declare. Far in the ruck in the early stages, he loosed a burst,of speed to work his way to the fore at the head o£ the stretch and was only a head away from Hope to Do, the pacemaker, at that stage; He was run into close quarters a furlong from home, and Britt apparently did not know what to do. Easing back, Spring Steel quickly sprang to the front, just managing to beat Hope to Do. A Laurel message says that Mr. Naylor has now announced that Winooka will' definitely run in the Piinlieo Handicap on Wednesday. Ilia weight is Bst 81b.

Later on yesterday Britt wow on Trevalliou, who was taken to America as a working companion for Winooka. Trevallipii was. easily-.victorious, winning easing np by fn/ur lengths. TTe received a "big hn ml" from the crowd. He was a rank outsider.
