Kain early in the afternoon led to doubts about play being possible, and in not a few cases players did.not put in all appearance. Generally, However, there were good musters on the various grounds. In anticipation of the weather lifting, the players waited on, but in some places conditions apparently were worse than in others, with the result that play was called oft. This happened ■in r one of the senior matches—Petone v. Hutt, which was set down to be played' at Petone—and in nearly all the lower grade matches. The four senioi- teams engaged at the Basin Reserve and the two senior teams at Rilbirnie were able to make a start after about an hour and a half's delay. Teams winning the toss had little hesitation in taking a strike, and in the tune available for play some creditable scoring was recorded, though there was nothing in the way of prolific run-getting. A feature of the batting was the good showing made by several of the younger players. Dustin, Duffy, and O'Neill were among those to perform well on the Basin Reserve, and dv Chateau and Burnette were the leading lights for Old Boys at Kilbirnie. lhe bcwlers had their work cut out to give of their best under the conditions, but with the aid of good fielding runs were kept down fairly well.
