A PUBLIC FAREWELL

WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM

(Special ta tho "Evening Post.") NELSON, October 20. Mr. M. R. Ross, officer in charge of the Labour Department office in Nelson for the past eight years, and who is under transfer on promotion to Christchurch, was publicly farewelled at a happy gathering in the Municipal Chambers. The May6r (Mr. AY. J. Moffatt) presided. By Mr. Ross s transfer Nelson loses a valuable citizen and an efficient and tactful officer, and warm tributes were paid to his work by representatives of the many^ bodies with which he has been associated. In presenting a substantial cheque to Mr. Ross as a mark of appreciation of the people of the city, the Mayor said he left Nelson with the goodwill of all sections of the community. A chased brass tray with suitable cutlery was presented to Mrs. Ross. Councillor G. Page, chairman of tlio Local Unemployment Committee and ol the Relief Committee, paid a warm tribute to Mr. Ross's work for the unemployed botn within and outside his duties, especially in regard to the work of the Smith Family. Mr. ±. Cullen spoke on behalf of labour unions and Mr. J. R. Stanger for the unemployed,' who rcgi-ettcd Mr. Ross's departure from the city. ' Mr. Ross, in- returning thanks, paid a tribute to the community spirit which has existed during the last few difficult years. ~ The Nelson City Council sat until midnight discussing the local water supply and hearing the proposals of a private company to supply the whole district from a large scheme in the Roding River. It was decided to instruct ■ the engineer to prepare a detailed report on the reticulation'in the city. The present long spell of dry weather has affected the supply, though there is no shortage, and the council decided to enforce hosing restrictions forthwith. / It was recently found that the water supplied by a pumping station at Normanby bridge had become, unsuitable for use and it is intended to establish a similar station- at Hanby Park, in the Maitai Valley. ■
