COLLEGE BOXING

SILVERSTREAM CHAMPIONS

The annual boxing tournament of St. Patrick's \ College, Silverstream, was concluded last night, fourteen finals being decided in weights ranging from sst 61b to nearly 12st. The general standard of the boxing was high, and gave evidence of training .and good coaching. The officials were:—Referee, Mr. B. A. Guise; judges, Messrs. A. Curtayne and W. P. Somerville; timekeepers, Messrs. E. Perry and Broad {all of the Wellington Boxing Association). The trophy winners were: —The McEvedy Cup for the most ■ improved boxer, E. Delaney; Wellington Boxing Association's medal for the most scientific boxer, H. Caulton; gamest loser, D. Newson. •• The results of the finals were:— Junior Welterweight.—Cronin (9st 41b") defeated C. McGurk (9st lib): It was a . hard and willing bout, with Cronin forcing the pace in every round. McGurk fought back gamely. Junior Paperweight.—P. Minto (6st 61b) defeated P. Hill (6st 91b). Hill carried the fight to his opponent with strong rights, while Minto cleverly nse.d his left. Junior Middleweight.—H. Caulton (lOst 41b)' defeated D. Stellin (lOst 31b). It was a bright bout marked by good in-fighting by Caulton. Stellin used his left to good effect in the last round. Flyweight.—R. Eivers (7st 51b) defeated P. Brennan (7st 101b). Brennan relied on heavy right swings, Eivers countering effectively with straight blows to face and body, and displaying excellent footwork. . Welterweight.—C. Cropp (9st Sib defeated T. Hallam (9st 101b). _ Cropp administered heavy punishment in the first round. Hallam used his left well in' the second round, but was shaken by a heavy right'to the chin. ICropp is a natural fighter, and shows considerable promise. Mosqiiitoweight.—B. Luke (sst 121b) defeated R. Dwyer (ost 61b). Light-heavyweight.—X. O'Connor (lOst 101b) defeated R. Matthews (lOst 81b).; Matthews was fast and his punching cleaner, but O'Connor was an elusive opponent, coming in to close quarters and clinches. , Paperweight.—W. Tacon (6st 91b) defeated T. Dance (Ost 81b) in a clever contest between two evenly-matched boys, but Tacon's ringcraft won him the fight in the last round. Featherweight.—E. Delaney (Bst 111b) defeated D. Newson (Bst 51b). Delaney was very aggressive from the start, but Newson came back with straight, clean hits. The boys gave a fine exhibition. Tigerweight.—E. Plummer (6st) defeated G. Trundle (6st 71b). The winner boxed very cleverly, and his was one of the best displays given during the tournament. He attacked strongly, coming in at the right time, and covered well when in difficul'iiglitweight.— O. Whitoman (Sst 121b) defeated J. Moss (Bst 131b). There was rather more vigour than skill. Middleweight.—S. Walsh (9st 91b) defeated G. Hannah (lOst 31b). The best boxing of the evening was done by Walsh. A gplendid first round saw both mixing it freely. Each took punishment, but Walsh concentrated on the body and won decisively. Bantamweight.—L. Quinn (7st 121b) defeated C. Gallagher (7st 91b). Quinu was the more aggressive boxer, with a nice right cross. Gallagher was faster and often landed with the left.

■ Heavyweight.—B. Vile (list) defeated G. Engcl (list 121b). The first round was fast and furious, ■with much wild hittiDg. Vile landed the cleaner punches, though lie found it difficult to keep out a heavier and more rugged opponent.
