HOLIDAY ON MONDAY

WELLINGTON ATTRACTIONS

Gone is the procession with its gailydecorated, lorries which at one time was an "event" on the Labour Day holiday in Wellington, but the holiday still remains, and if for no other reason than that it' provides a welcome break from work-a-day activities, its popularity continues. Labour Day this year falls on Monday, and, as lately bright sunny weather has been experienced in AVellington, there is some-i ground for hoping for a pleasurable day, although certainly in the past the weather quite often has been out of tune with the occasion. As, however, miserable conditions prevailed last year, a double measure of meteorological compensation, is due for Monday. The holiday, if the weather is fine,! will be spent in many different ways, and, doubtless, with the weekend available as well, there will be quito a number who will be going out of town. For those remaining in the city there will bo a number of sports attractions. A big sports gathering, which has been associated with Labour Pay .for many years past, is to be held on the Basin Eeserve. Most of the morning ;will be devoted: to Ta.ces for married men and women, and for>children, and in, the afternoon there will be a flue series of athletic and cycling events under the rules of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic and. Cycling Association} in which" well-known competitors will be taking part. Wrestling con,tests and Highland dancing. will provide further variety in an interesting programme.' ' : The Evans ■ Bay Yacht and Motorboat Club . wil bo holding a regatta in Evans Bay. The first event is to start at 10.1 5a.m., and there will be Taces throughout the day. At 2.15 p.m. the official opening of the club's season is to take place. , ■ ... The final day of the Wellington Eaeing Club's Spring Meeting at Trentham will bo a big attraction, and for those interested in motor-cycling and desiring to travel further afield the an- j nual meeting of the Foxton United Sports Association is to be held on the Foxton racecourse. There are ten events in the programme for this meeting, including the.New Zealand middleweight championship. The first race is to'start at 11.30 a.m. Various cricket matches are to be played, and the Hutt Club is sending two teams to Masterton to play Wairapapa elevens. ~ v , For tennis enthusiasts, the liuot vailey Association is holding a;.
