ROWING

NORTON CUP REGATTA

PROGRAMME APPROVED

Plans for the Norton Cup Regatta to bo held on November 25 in conjunct tion with tho Confidence Carnival wore discussed at a meeting of the committee of the Wellington Amateur Bowing Association last evening. A desire on tho part of the committee to comply with the wishes of the anonymous donor of the' Norton Cup as to the conditions of-the regatta resulted in considerable discussion. In donating the trophy the donor expressed the wish that the various events should conform as closely as possible to those of the Pieton Begatta, his idea being that the Norton Cup Regatta should be something in ■ the nature of a try-out for tho crews competing at Pieton. The committee wished to comply with the donor's wishes in every way possible, but it was faced with the difficulty this season that the Norton Cup Regatta had been set down for November 25. It was considered that the crews would not have had sufficient training by that time to race in beat-and-best boats as they would do at Pieton. It was also thought that it would be too much to ask crews to race over two-mile courses so early in the season. It was finally decided that owing to the special circumstances existing this year the Norton Cup Begatta should be rowed in clinker boats over a one-miie course. The conditions of the regafrra this year were, however, not' to be taken as a precedent. Future Norton Cup regattas, it was: stated,, would be held in' Deceiriber, and an endeavour would then be made to follow the wishes of the donor of the trophy. This year's regatta will comprise teri»events, maiden fours, junior pairs, senior sculls, youths' ■ if ours, , senior fours, lightweight niaidcn fours, maiden pairs, junior fours, maiden doubles, and senior pairs.
